DEFINITION Capillaries are the smallest type of blood vessels.

FUNCTION OF CAPILLARIES Capillaries distribute oxygenated blood from arteries to the tissues of the body and to feed deoxygenated blood from the tissues back into the veins.

LAYERS OF CAPILLARIES They are very thin, approximately 5 micrometers in diameter, and are composed of only two layers of cells, an inner layer of endothelial cells and an outer layer of epithelial cells.

TYPES OF CAPILLARIES There are three (3) types of capillaries: continuous fenestrated sinusoid (discontinuous)

CONTINUOUS CAPILLARIES The most common type of capillaries found in nervous system, fat and muscle tissue. They contain small gaps in between their endothelial cells to allow gases, water, glucose, and hormones to pass through. Except capillaries in the brain which form part of the blood-brain barrier and protect the brain by allowing the most essential nutrients to cross. These capillaries in the brain have thicker basement membranes and do not have gaps between endothelial cells.

CONTINUOUS CAPILLARY

FENESTRATED CAPILLARY Fenestrated capillaries are “leakier” than continuous capillaries and contain small pores and small gaps between cells, in their walls that allow exchange of larger molecules. They are found in areas that require a lot of exchange between blood and tissues such as the small intestine, where nutrients are absorbed from food the kidneys, where waste products are filtered out of the blood

SINUSOID CAPILLARIES The rarest and “leakiest” type of capillary. Allow exchange of large molecules and cells because of larger gaps in capillary wall and incomplete basement membrane. Found in tissues, such as liver, spleen, and bone marrow. In the bone marrow, these capillaries allow newly produced blood cells to enter into the bloodstream and begin circulation.

PORT WINE STAINS Is a type of birthmark caused by widening of capillaries in the skin. The skin appear pink or dark red. Over time, they can darken in color and thicken. While they don’t go away on their own, port wine stains also don’t spread to other areas. Port wine stains typically don’t require treatment, although laser treatment can help to make them lighter in color.

Petichae These are small, round (pin head) red or purple spots that appear on the skin. They happen when capillaries leak blood into the skin. OTHERS Systemic capillary leak syndrome experts think it may be related to a substance in the blood that damages capillary walls. Arteriovenous malformation syndrome People with arteriovenous malformation syndrome have an abnormal tangle of arteries and veins that are connected to each other without capillaries in between. These tangles can occur anywhere in the body, but are most often found in the brain and spinal cord. Microcephaly-capillary malformation syndrome Microcephaly-capillary malformation syndrome is a rare genetic condition that starts before birth.
