Neurology Neurology is the branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of disorders of the nervous system. The nervous system is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates body activities. It has two major divisions: Central nervous system: the brain and spinal cord Peripheral nervous system: all other neural elements, such as eyes, ears, skin, and other "sensory receptors" A doctor who specializes in neurology is called a neurologist. The neurologist treats disorders that affect the brain, spinal cord, and nerves.

Education to Become a Neurologist in the United States Four years of pre-medical education in a college. Four years of medical school. One year of work in a hospital without getting paid. At least 3 years of neurology training. Total: 12 years

Why it is my passion The brain is the most complex structure in the universe. The brain consists of about 100 billion neurons, which is about the same number as all the stars that we know. It controls the function of every organ, cell and tissue; your brain and nervous system control every part of your being. That is why it is my passion. I want to do it when I grow up.

Part of the brain Cerebrum: is the largest part of the brain and is composed of right and left hemispheres. It performs higher functions like interpreting touch, vision and hearing, as well as speech, reasoning, emotions, and learning. Cerebellum: is located under the cerebrum. Its function is to coordinate muscle movements, maintain posture, balance and learn new things. The medulla or Brainstem: It controls automatic activities such as breathing, making your heart beat, body temperature, waking up and sleeping, sneezing, coughing, and swallowing.

Spinal cord In order for your brain to communicate effectively with your body, there must be a connection between the brain and your body. That connection is called the spinal cord. Think of the spinal cord as a telephone cable containing millions of tiny “wires,” called nerves.

History of Neurology The study of neurology dates back to prehistoric times. The Incas appear to have practiced trepanning (making a hole into the human skull) since the late Stone age to treat health problems. An ancient Egyptian treatise contains descriptions and suggests neurological treatments. The ancient Greeks dissected the nervous system. An ancient Chinese physician and surgical pioneer who is said to have performed neurosurgical procedures The academic discipline began between the 16th and 19th centuries with the work and research of many neurologists. There was not much advancement in neurosurgery until late 19th early 20th century, when electrodes were placed on the brain and superficial tumors were removed
