What is it? Link nurses (LNs) are traditionally defined as practicing nurses with an expressed interest in IC. ICLN scheme have been in use since the 1980s in a number of countries. ICLNs are the link between their clinical wards and the infection control department. They should not be seen as substitute for ICPs. They are however are not spies on their fellows.

ICLNs Selection They must be interested, energetic and active in their daily work and they should know that their not ICPs. Hey should have at least of 2 years clinical training. They usually work in particular specialist areas, or local clinical ward and help IC team. Any area in the hospital can have ICLN including critical areas and non-critical areas. The success of this scheme highlighted the importance of involving clinical staff in the implementation IC activities.

ICLNs Preparation Educational components of LN systems should be developed locally, based on local need of the hospital. Other education support: courses, workshops or on-line sessions can be helpful and supported. ICLNs undertake specific tasks or roles as required within their scope of responsibility. A clear job description is required upon joining. Objectives of the scheme should be clear to them and they should know exactly their role, authority and limitation. ICLNs should understand that they are active advocates not spies on their colleagues.

ICLNs Preparation (Cont.,) They are usually recognized by colleagues for their unique function and contribution, and have support from their managers. They should be informed that their involvement is a voluntary, and usually no overtime or extra benefits are given. Full support should be given to them to attend local educational events, support groups or related workshops.

The Role of ICLNs To liaise between their clinical area and the infection control team continuously and actively. Help in writing IC policies in their own specialty. To take responsibly with regards to application of the infection control policies and procedures within their clinical area. To coordinate the required activities with the nurse in charge of the clinical area. To be responsibil about the implementation of the required precautions in their clinical area.

The Role of ICLNs (Cont.,) To assist in the education of staff in their clinical area. To coordinate with the infection control team of any lack of precautions. To be the organizing officer in their clinical area if a patient needed isolation. To participate in teaching staff / patients appropriate aspects of care relating to infection control policies. To attend the regular infection control link nurse meeting and form a network within the hospital.

Activities Hand Hygiene monitoring. Device days collection. Writing parts or sections of the IC policy & procedures. Monthly rates distribution. Follow up of room terminal cleaning. Suggestions and support to the IC. Help in Family Education.

Application Difficulties Poor or lack of interest. Lack of support from the head nurse. Lack of hospital administration support. Bad selection by nursing department. Staff turn over. Shortage of staff. After noon/ night duties.

Conclusion The role of ICLN is still evolving, and not all nursing departments of hospitals support it. Hospital directors should understand their role and support the application. Stability of the ICLN who join the scheme is very critical in the continues success. Understanding the heir role and limitations is a key note in the scheme success.
