When the donor blood is transfused into the recipients bloodstream, the red blood cells (RBCs) in the donor blood can carry oxygen to the body tissues, which is essential for energy production. The RBCs also contain hemoglobin, a protein that helps transport oxygen and carbon dioxide between the lungs and other organs.

The plasma in the donor blood contains various proteins, such as albumin, which help maintain fluid balance in the body. It also contains antibodies, which help fight off infections and diseases.

After a blood transfusion, the recipients body must process and eliminate any excess fluids and cells in the donor blood. This process is primarily carried out by the kidneys, which filter the blood and remove any excess fluid and waste products.

In some cases, the recipients body may produce antibodies against the donor blood cells after the transfusion, leading to a delayed transfusion reaction. This reaction can cause symptoms such as fever, jaundice, and anemia. To minimize the risk of a transfusion reaction, doctors carefully match the donor and recipient blood types and monitor the recipients vital signs during and after the transfusion.
