The global flu pandemic of 1918 was dubbed “Spanish flu” as a consequence of wartime censorship rules. While other countries minimized reporting flu to maintain morale, Spain was neutral and allowed reports on the diseases progress, giving the impression that Spain was particularly hard-hit. It killed 50 million people worldwide – more than the whole of the First World War (WWI) which concluded the same year that the outbreak started in earnest and infected an estimated 500 million (approx. 1/3 of the world’s population). It still ranks as one of the deadliest epidemics in history. Living conditions and the movement of people associated with the ongoing war aided the spread of infection and young, fit, healthy people died alongside more vulnerable groups. It wasn’t until the 1930s that scientists proved influenza was caused by a virus, and the strain that caused the pandemic was since identified as the H1N1 strain. The origins of the outbreak have been hotly debated for decades, but lower mortality rates in China1 suggest some degree of prior immunity which may indicate that the infection stemmed from China.
